PHILIPPINES EYEING ASIAN CUP 2023 SLOT

The target for Philippines Soccer is a spot at the Asian Cup 2023 tournament in China after missing out on qualification for next year’s FIFA World Cup tournament on Qatari soil.


Philippines Soccer won’t be represented at the World Cup tournament in Qatar next year after the country failed to move past the second round stage. Philippines Soccer featured in Group A of the second round qualifiers for Qatar 2022 in the Asian section alongside the likes of Guam, Syria, Maldives and China PR.

Philippines finished in third spot with eleven (11) points from eight games at the end of the second qualifying round for Qatar 2022 in the Asian region. Philippines finished behind China PR and leaders Syria.China PR and Syria moved into the third round of the Asian qualifiers for Qatar 2022 thanks to their haul of 19 points and 21 points respectively in Group A of the second round qualifiers.

In Group A of the second round qualifiers, Philippines lost to Syria home and away in addition to losing at the home of China PR. Philippines also drew at home to China PR and at home to Maldives. Philippines beat Guam home and away in addition to the away win over Maldives.

For the 2023 Asian Cup, Philippines Soccer is represented in the third round as one of 24 teams. The Philippines are in the second pot at the moment and it can still change ahead of the draw billed for February 2022. The 24 teams would be divided into six groups of four teams each.

Thirteen (13) teams have already qualified for China 2023 and eleven (11) more teams are expected to join them from the third round of the qualifiers. Each group winners will advance to the tournament alongside the best five teams in second place.
